Special Events for the 2008-2009 Season




“Meet the Composer” During September, 2008 and January, 2009


During the months of September and January, the music of each Sunday will focus on a different composer who has played a key role in church music. In September, we will hear music selections from Allen Pote, Norman Landis, Robert Lau and Sandra Ford. In January, the featured composers are John Rutter, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Lloyd Larson and Mark L. Williams.




November 2, 2008 – 125th Anniversary of the Sanctuary


In celebration of the church’s 125th anniversary of the present sanctuary, there will be a festive celebration at the one 9:00am worship service. Much of the music sung at the festive service on November 1, 1883 will be sung by the choir and congregation. These include the three hymns “An Earthly Temple Here We Raise,” “Christ is our Corner-stone” and O thou Whose Own Vast Temple Stands” from the Presbyterian Hymnal of 1874. In addition, the Chancel Choir will sing the “Hallelujah” Chorus from Handel’s Messiah and the movement “I Will Extol Thee” from the Mass in B-Flat by Henry Farmer. The Memorial Ringers will perform a festival piece for the prelude and the Chancel Choir will sing the new anthem ”Our Hope For Years to Come” by Mary McDonald.




April 10, 2009 – John Purifoy’s “Shadows of Sacrifice”


The Chancel Choir will perform the cantata “Shadows of Sacrifice” by John Purifoy at the Good Friday tenebrae service at 7:30pm on April 10th. The work follows the traditional service of scripture readings, dialogue, music and the extinguishing of seven candles until the church is in total darkness. It’s one of the most moving services of the year as we feel the death of our Savior and then prepare for his glorious resurrection on Easter morn.




April 26, 2009 – Mendelssohn’s “Come Let Us Sing”


The Chancel Choir will also perform Felix Mendelssohn’s cantata “Come Let Us Sing” during the worship service on Sunday, April 26th at one service at 9:00am. This work will be in celebration of the 200th birth of Mendelssohn in 1809 and feature of quartet with Nicole Vilkner, soprano; Daria Dragan, contralto; Gary Young, tenor; and Glenn Boothby, baritone.




May 10, 2009 – Children’s Choir presents “Moses and the Freedom Fanatics”


The Children’s Choir will perform the jazz musical “Moses and the Freedom Fanatics” on Sunday, May 10th at the one family worship service at 9:00am. The performance will features choreography with costumes accompanied by piano, bass guitar and drums.
